Box Score Faulkner put together a 22-10 run over the final 10 minutes of play Saturday afternoon to notch a 63-52 road win over Florida College.
""We spread them out a little bit the last seven or eight minutes," Faulkner Head Coach Reed Sutton said. "We did a good job of attacking them inside off the drive and from the post and we did a good job finishing the game."
Four Lady Eagles combined for 61 of the squad's points to anchor the effort. Angela Grant (FR/Hoover, Ala.) led all scorers with 19 point and nine rebounds. Kayla Key (JR/Hartselle, Ala.) finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Ashlyn Adkins (SO/Locust Fork, Ala.) had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Olivia Colson (FR/Thompson's Station, Tenn.) notched 10 points and seven rebounds.
The game, which was the second with Key as the team's starting point guard, saw the junior run her road trip point total up to 38.
"She's so fast with the ball in her hands. She's got great vision and she has complete command of what we're trying to get accomplished offensively. I think the shooting has just come from being a little more confident," Sutton said. "She had our first nine points of the game. We really weren't playing very well early on, weren't playing a lot of energy and, really, she kept us in it that first quarter and had to guard their best player."
Despite committing 26 turnovers while Florida College posted only seven, Faulkner earned a split on the two-game road trip shooting a solid 41.8 percent from the floor and 100 percent from the free throw line.
"We held them to a low field goal percentage and then we did a fantastic job rebounding. When you balance out our turnovers with rebounding and field goal percentage defense, the turnovers didn't hurt us too bad," Sutton said. "The other thing that balances out those turnovers is 19 assist on 23 made baskets."
The Lady Eagle defense limited Florida College to 23 percent shooting, a performance that included 57 missed Lady Falcon shots. Sutton's team also dominated the rebounding battle, out-boarding Florida College 55-32.
Adkins and Megan Wilkinson (FR/Lumberton, Texas) played a combined 63 minutes, providing the anchors to a defensive effort that sealed the win.
"Megan played fantastic. She didn't do a whole lot of scoring but she always plays great defensively," Sutton said. "And Ashlyn did a great job holding their best shooter to zero points. Those two guys really provided a spark defensively."
Passionate Amukamara had 18 points for Florida College while Kynese Davis finished with 13.
Faulkner (11-7, 4-5 SSAC) return home Monday to host Middle Georgia State University at 5:30 p.m.
