Eagles fall on late Roadrunner stunner

Box Score

A 78th minute scorpion kick from Kevin Villatoro saw Faulkner fall to Dalton State by the all-too-familiar scoreline of 2-1 Saturday night at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium in the SSAC Game of the Week. Of the six meetings between the two sides, four matches have ended with the Roadrunners taking a 2-1 win and five have been decided by one goal.

Due to the delay before the start of the women's match before, the 3:30 p.m. kickoff turned into a game under the lights. Faulkner weathered an early storm in large part due to a triple save from Caio Calado (JR/Sao Bernardo Do Campo, Sao Paulo, Brazil) off a long throw into the box by Dalton State, but the levee broke in the 20th minute when a diagonal ball from Jeremiah Ruth beat the backline and found Noah Thomas who froze the approaching Calado to strike first.

Andre Mazariegos (FR/Enterprise, Ala.) stopped a dangerous run from the Roadrunners late in the first half and converted defense to offense passing to Carlos Buruca (FR/Hoover, Ala.). Buruca's line drive pass was flicked on by Pedro Moura (JR/Garanhuns, Brazil)'s head to Sam Kelly (JR/Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England) who took one touch around the keeper before walking the equalizer into the goal in the 45th minute.

Faulkner will welcome Florida College to Montgomery for the first time since 2007 for another SSAC matchup Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
