Evan Gillespie (JR/Princeton, N.J.) continued his streak of dominance in the first game Saturday, striking out nine over seven shutout innings while scattering six hits and a walk. In four outings this season, Gillespie has worked 22 innings and still has an ERA of 0.00.
Faulkner more than made the effort stand up, hanging nine runs over the first three innings of play to put the game out of reach. Jacob Freeland (SR/Cape Coral, Fla.) walked in the second inning and scored on Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.)'s fielder's choice. Guzman later scored on Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio)'s fielder's choice.
Freeland tripled home John Michael Matthews (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) and Dejhard Kimbrough in the second inning. Guzman later flew out to left, driving in Freeland. Holmstead then singled and scored on a Black single for the 6-0 lead.
Matthews walked in the third and scored on a wild pitch. Freeland flew out to right to drive in Kimbrough before Tek Whyte scored on an error to move the lead to 9-0.
The Eagles hung four more runs in the sixth when Kimbrough doubled home Brandon Suttles (SR/Panama City, Fla.). Myron Mebane (SR/Tallahassee, Fla.) doubled in Kimbrough and Joey Vargas. Bo McClintock (JR/Beaver Creek, Ore.) later drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Zach Glines and cap the scoring.
Faulkner 7, Florida National 3
Suttles pitched three innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out four to nail down the win for the Eagles in the nightcap. Faulkner won the game with a four-run rally in the fifth inning. Guzman singled to open the stretch. Black followed with a hit of his own before Bo Seccombe (JR/Tallahassee, Fla.) singled home Guzman to give Faulkner the lead.
Hagen Holmstead (JR/Salt Lake City, Utah) reached on an error that allowed Seccombe and Black to score before himself crossing home on a wild pitch.
Whyte singled in the first and scored on a Guzman double to put Faulkner up 1-0. Whyte doubled in the third and scored on a Guzman RBI single for the 2-0 Faulkner advantage.
Tyler Paulsen (JR/Jolliet, Ill.) singled in the fourth with his team down 3-2. Whyte then singled to plate Paulsen to tie the game.
Faulkner (10-2) is set to play a doubleheader against Thomas University Sunday.
