Lady Eagles knock off Brewton-Parker in senior day thriller

Box Score

A youthful Faulkner (14-15, 7-13 SSAC) squad held the lead on Brewton-Parker (17-11, 13-7 SSAC) for 38:48 Saturday afternoon, warding off an intense Baron press en route to a 62-57 nailbiting victory on senior day for one of its biggest wins of the season. The Lady Eagles held Brewton-Parker to just 26.9 percent from the floor matching the intensity on the defensive end as the visitors.

After the Barons found a layup on the opening possession, Ashlyn Adkins (SO/Locust Fork, Ala.) drained a three just 1:12 into the game and never trailed again. The Lady Eagles ballooned the lead to 14 in the second quarter, but the Barons used a 6-0 run in 3:22 bridging the final two quarters to cut the lead to one. With just 17 seconds left and Lady Eagles leading by three, Adkins sunk a pair of free throws to spread the game to two possessions. Kayla Key (JR/Hartselle, Ala.) blocked a Naomi Wilds shot on the ensuing possession with five seconds left as the rebound bounced off a Brewton-Parker rebounder for Faulkner to be able to ice the game away.

Angela Grant (FR/Hoover, Ala.) had her second consecutive double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace the floor in both categories. "If there is a better freshman in the country, much less the conference than Angela, I haven't seen her," head coach Reed Sutton said. Adkins added 17 points and led the Lady Eagles in assists and steals with four and three, respectively. "Ashlyn was just being Ashlyn." Valentina Klocker (FR/Salzburg, Austria) added 11 from the bench. "Valentina had her best game in a Faulkner uniform," Sutton said. "She really competed on both ends for us today."

Despite a balmy 14.3 percent shooting performance from behind the arc, Faulkner shot 40 percent from the floor on the afternoon. Morgan Sykes (SR/Morven, Ga.) grabbed a rebound in her first career start on her senior day. "I am so happy we got the win today on Senior Day," Sutton said. "Nobody deserves to go out of Tine Davis a winner like Mo."

The Lady Eagles are on a two game winning streak and wrapped up the eight seed in the conference tournament. They will face Middle Georgia Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 in the first round of the SSAC Women's Basketball Championship. The Knights swept the regular season series.
