Eagles split with Warriors in first day of midweek series

Box Score

Third-ranked Faulkner split a pair of nonconference games with 19th-ranked Indiana Tech Tuesday at Harrison Field. The Eagles took game one 3-0 before falling 3-1 in the nightcap.

Faulkner 3, Indiana Tech 0

It took four innings to find separation between the two nationally ranked sides. Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.) found a one out single before Hagan Holmstead (JR/Salt Lake City, Utah) drew a walk. Bo McClintock (JR/Beaver Creek, Ore.) ran for Guzman at second. Jacob Freeland (SR/Cape Coral, Fla.) grounded to first base on a 2-1 and looked to be an inning-ending double play, but the throw back to first from Kyle Harvey sailed allowing McClintock to score the eventual game winning run.

Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) started the bottom of the sixth with a single before stealing second. Holmstead drew another walk and the Eagles completed a double steal to put runners on second and third. Freeland again caused chaos with what looked like a simple out. A slow infield grounder was fielded easily by Warrior catcher Glen McClain. Content to allow Ragan to score, McClain threw to first for what should have been the simple out. Instead, the throw went past the first baseman and allowed Holmstead to score uncontested.

Kyle Laberge (JR/Mansfield, Texas) was stellar in his first start and win keeping the Warriors off the board and allowing just four hits in five innings while striking out two. Alex Carrillo picked up the save in two innings of relief while allowing just one hit.

The seven inning contest lasted just over an hour and a half.

Indiana Tech 3, Faulkner 1

The nightcap was much slower lasting nearly three hours in the seven inning bout. Grant Heisinger drove in the opening run in the first inning with a single when Jacob Alvidrez scored from second. Alvidrez cranked an 0-2 pitch over the left field wall in the third to double the Indiana Tech advantage. McClain reached on a misplayed grounder by Mike Battle (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) and later scored on a Jake Ritson double to take a 3-0 lead.

Faulkner battled back in the fourth with patient batting. Sam Anthony (JR/Columbus, Ga.) and Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio) each reached on walks before McClintock's single drove home Anthony. The Eagles loaded the bases with two outs later when Te'kwaan Whyte (SR/Stone Mountain, Ga.) drew a walk. A ground out from Marcus Ragan ended the inning and strand three batters. Faulkner left two runners on in the fifth as well en route to nine runners left on.

The Eagles pitching staff combined for five hit batters and two walks in the contest. Joseph Vargas (JR/Toja Balto, P.R.) was tabbed with the loss.

Faulkner and Indiana Tech will conclude the series Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Harrison Field.
