Faulkner 18, Martin Methodist 12
Two five run outbursts as well as a four run rally lifted the Eagles over the Redhawks in game one Friday night.
Jacob Freeland (SR/Cape Coral, Fla.) drove in Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) and Te'kwaan Whyte (SR/Stone Mountain, Ga.) with a single to center in the first inning after the two found singles and a double steal to open the game. The Redhawks countered with a run in the bottom half to cut the score to 2-1.
The Eagles opened up the game with 11 runs from the fourth through sixth inning. Jonathan Villa (JR/Ensenada, Mexico) picked up an RBI double to score Hagan Holmstead (JR/Salt Lake City, Utah) before a throwing error on a Ragan grounder to short scored John Michael Mathews (JR/Birmingham, Ala.). Just like the first inning, Martin Methodist answered the two run Faulkner inning with a single run of its own.
Villa drew a bases loaded walk in the fifth to score Freeland. Ragan had an RBI single before Whyte copied Villa's plate discipline to score Sam Anthony (JR/Columbus, Ga.) on another walk. Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.) drove home DeJhard Kimbrough (JR/Atlanta, Ga.) and Ragan on a single to third to take a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth. The Redhawks battled back with three runs to cut the away lead to 9-5.
Ragan's fly ball to center was dropped by Brendan Granger allowing Mathews and Kimbrough to score before Whyte found his first home run over the season on the very next pitch to give the Eagles a 13-5 lead. The Redhawks scored four runs over the next two innings to set the score at 13-9 before the eighth.
Four eighth inning walks from Martin Methodist allowed the Eagles to score five times on two hits. The Redhawks would score three more runs before the game was over, but it was not enough to complete the comeback.
Evan Gillespie (JR/Princeton, N.J.) surrendered his first earned runs of the season in the win striking out six batters. He currently ranks second in the NAIA in wins (6) and third in ERA (.570.)
Faulkner 8, Martin Methodist 2
Just like the game the night before, Faulkner jumped on the board early and often in the victory Saturday afternoon.
Guzman's sacrifice fly in the first inning scored Ragan who drew a walk and completed another double steal with Whyte. Freeland followed Guzman with a sacrifice fly of his own to score Whyte the next at bat.
After a three up, three down bottom of the first, Holmstead and Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio) found back to back doubles to score Holmstead to open the second. Another throwing error from short on a Ragan grounder scored Kimbrough with two outs. Antonio Frias (JR/Panama City, Panama) struck out the side in the second.
Freeland found his second home run of the season on a full count in the third. Mathews hit a sacrifce fly later in the inning to score Tyler Paulsen (JR/Jolliet, Ill.) to take a 6-0 lead into the fourth.
The fifth inning saw Holmstead score Freeland on a sacrifice fly before Villa plated Paulsen on a groundout.
Martin Methodist scored two in the bottom of the seventh but could not overcome the 8-0 deficit built through the game.
Frias earned the win with an electric 11 strikeout performance in six innings while allowing just one hit.
Faulkner 12, Martin Methodist 6
Max Guzman launched his seventh home run of the season to start off the first inning of the nightcap with a two run shot to center. Martin Methodist found a run in the bottom half to cut the lead to 2-1.
Faulkner exploded for four runs in the third with a two run shot from Holmstead. Villa drove home two more runs with a two out single to left.
The bats stayed hot in the fifth when Myron Mebane (SR/Tallahassee, Fla.) hit a two run dinger of his own before Whyte was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to put Faulkner 9-1 up. A walk, wild pitch and double brought the second run across for Martin Methodist in the fifth.
Another three run burst from the Eagles in the sixth was aided by an error, wild pitch and Black reaching on a dropped third strike. The Redhawks utilized three hits and an error to score a run in the bottom of the sixth. The hosts would score thrice in the final three innings but the lead was too much to overcome.
Jacob Hulcher (SR/Montgomery, Ala.) picked up the win striking out five in five innings while allowing just two runs.
The Eagles will travel to West Point, Ga. to face (RV) Point University at 5 p.m.
