Point upends Faulkner with late rally

The No. 2 ranked Faulkner Eagles were cruising until the late innings Tuesday in a 5-4 road loss to Point University.

The Skyhawks rallied for four runs over their final four outs for the victory, stealing the win away from Faulkner when Kyle Kelly hit a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth and came around to score on Dwight Washington's single down the left field line. The walk-off heartbreaker gained its momentum in the bottom of the eighth when nine Point batters stepped to the plate in a three-run rally that tied the game 4-4. The rally came with two outs in the inning and saw B.J. Johnson, Anthony Young and Jason Fox score.

Faulkner had previously stretched its lead to 4-1 in the top of the eighth when Tyler Paulsen (JR/Jolliet, Ill.) scored on a Jacob Freeland (SR/Cape Coral, Fla.) RBI double. The Eagles opened the scoring in the fourth as Te'kwaan Whyte (SR/Stone Mountain, Ga.) singled and scored on a Freeland sacrifice fly. The lead moved to 2-0 in the fifth Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio) parlayed a leadoff walk into a run on a Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) fielder's choice. Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.) walked and scored on a Hagan Holmstead (JR/Salt Lake City, Utah) single in the sixth for the 3-0 advantage.

Point got its first run in the seventh after Fox doubled and scored on a David Torres single.

Joseph Vargas (JR/Toja Balto, P.R.) pitched four scoreless innings to start the game for Faulkner.

Faulkner (22-7) travels to Waleska, Ga. Wednesday to face Reinhardt University.
