Box Score It was a bit of an odd day in Blue Mountain, Miss. Thursday. In a series that was forced up a day on the schedule due to the threat of inclement weather over the weekend, Faulkner saw the best and, possibly, the worst of itself over 12 innings of play. The Eagles took game one in no-hit fashion before falling behind 8-4 in a suspended contest in game two.
FAULKNER 2, BLUE MOUNTAIN 0
A combined no-hitter by Evan Gillespie (JR/Princeton, N.J.) and Alejandro Carrillo (SR/West Covina, Calif.) topped the Toppers' combined one-hitter in game one as Faulkner downed Blue Mountain 2-0. Henry McDonald worked six strong innings, scattering five walks and one hit while striking out five and allowing two earned runs. Witt Roaton pitched a scoreless seventh for BMC. The Toppers' best effort on the mound was undone, in part, by three Blue Mountain errors.
Tek Whyte scored one run and Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) the other while Bo McClintock (JR/Beaver Creek, Ore.) picked up the game's only RBI.
Gillespie (5-0) has now worked 26 and two-thirds innings this season without allowing an earned run. Carrillo picked up his first save of the year, lowering his ERA to 2.78 after his third consecutive outing without allowing an earned run.
BLUE MOUNTAIN 8, FAULKNER 4 (SUSPENDED)
Faulkner will need a considerable rally Friday morning to avoid its first SSAC loss of the season. The Eagles trailed 8-4 through five innings of play when the game was suspended for darkness.
Blue Mountain erased a 3-0 deficit with a pair of three-run innings before adding another to the board in the home half of the fifth. To this point in the contest, the Toppers have stolen five bases and forced four different Eagle pitchers to the mound.
Faulkner opened the scoring in the first when Jacob Freeland (SR/Cape Coral, Fla.) singled in John Michael Mathews.
Sam Anthony (JR/Columbus, Ga.) and Marcus Ragan went back-to-back with one-out singles in the second before pulling off a double steal. Mathews then singled home Anthony for the 2-0 lead. Hagen Holmstead followed with a single of his own to plate Ragan and put Faulkner up 3-1.
Faulkner picked up one more run in the fourth when Mathews single and later scored on a Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.) base hit.
Play is set to resume at 10 a.m. Friday before the teams meet for game three of the series.
