Box Score Game two of the series featured 40 more hits and 25 more runs than its predecessor, but Faulkner overcame a sizable deficit to rally for a series-clinching 15-12 win over Blue Mountain.
The Eagles trailed Blue Mountain 8-4 when play in Blue Mountain, Miss. was suspended Thursday evening due to darkness. After play resumed Friday morning, things got worse for the visiting Eagles. The Toppers took a 12-5 lead into the eighth inning and appeared poised to erase its 0-25 lifetime mark against Faulkner baseball.
That was, at least, until Faulkner started an improbable rally. Bo Seccombe (JR/Tallahassee, Fla.) homered to left to start a three-run eighth. Sam Anthony (JR/Columbus, Ga.) then hit a two-out single and swiped second before scoring on a Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) single to center. John Michael Mathews (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) followed with a single that plated Ragan to cut the deficit to 12-8.
Faulkner then rallied for four more runs in the ninth to tie the game. Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.) singled ahead of consecutive walks to Jacob Freeland (SR/Cape Coral, Fla.) and Seccombe. Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio) then singled home Guzman to narrow it to 12-9. Freeland later scored on a passed ball Bo McClintock (JR/Beaver Creek, Ore.) drove in Seccombe with a grounder to second to cut the deficit to one. Anthony followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Black and tie the game.
Jose Torres did all he could to stop the bleeding for Blue Mountain in the ninth when he drew a leadoff walk before stealing second and third. Heath Olive (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) dug in and induced a pop up to end the threat and send the game to extra innings.
The game stayed knotted at 12 until the 11th inning when Faulkner rallied for three runs to steal the victory. Seccombe opened the frame with a walk and later scored on a McClintock single. Ragan hit a sacrifice fly to center that drove in Black to move the lead to 14-12. Hagen Holmstead singled to left to score McClintock for the final run of the game.
Faulkner needed seven pitchers to get through the game after using two in a combined no-hitter in the series opener. The two SSAC squads totaled 27 runs, 41 hits and 32 runners left on base in the game.
Olive picked up the win, working the final three innings while striking out seven batters.
Mathews highlighted the offensive effort with a 6-for-7 batting line that included three RBIs and two runs scored in addition to a walk. Guzman went 4-for-8 while Holmstead had three hits in six trips. Black, Anthony and Ragan had two hits apiece for the Eagles.
Mathews finished one hit shy of the most base hits in a single game in NAIA history. His six were second only to Jeff Ogden (Peru State – 1988) and Chuch MacFarkane (Cumberland – 2004) who each had seven in a single game.
