Miscues cost Faulkner in first conference loss

Box Score

The Eagles suffered their first loss of the SSAC schedule in the final game of the series against Blue Mountain 12-6. The game was called in the eighth inning due to the field conditions from the rain. This marks the first loss to the Toppers in program history.

Faulkner jumped out to a strong advantage in the first inning, plating four to open the contest. Jacob Freeland (SR/Cape Coral, Fla.) laced a one-out double to deep right-center to bring home Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) and Hagan Holmstead (JR/Salt Lake City, Utah). Freeland scored on the next pitch as Sam Anthony (JR/Columbus, Ga.)'s single coupled with a Will Garriga throwing error brought Freeland around safely. Tyler Paulsen (JR/Jolliet, Ill.) advanced Anthony on a single before stealing second. Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio)'s sacrifice fly brought Anthony home for the final run of the inning.

Trey Hathaway was hit with an 0-1 pitch to spark a two out rally for the Toppers in the bottom of the fourth in which Blue Mountain cut the score to 4-2. Things unraveled for the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth as 12 Toppers came to the plate in a six run outburst. Faulkner walked five batters and surrendered three hits and an error before stopping the bleeding with a bases loaded popup from the Blue Mountain cleanup hitter.

Rain delayed the game before the sixth but it did not slow down the bats for either team. Freeland drew a bases loaded walk with two outs after fouling four pitches off. Pitching errors hurt the Eagles once more as a wild pitch, hit by pitch and a walk each brought in Toppers in a four-run sixth inning to break open the game 12-6.

Six different Eagles pitched in the contest and divided eight walks, five hit batters and four wild pitches in the eight innings. Defensively, Faulkner commited two errors as well. Alex Carillo was tabbed with the loss.

The Eagles will look to rebound Tuesday afternoon when 19th-ranked Indiana Tech visits Harrison Field for a three game series. Faulkner defeated the Warriors twice in the Opening Round last season, including the thirteen inning epic which ended in a walk-off home run to send the Eagles to Lewiston. Tuesday's doubleheader begins at 5 p.m.
