Box Score Faulkner found a way against Mobile Friday night when Hagen Holmstead (JR/Salt Lake City, Utah) hit a walk-off single to score Myron Mebane (SR/Tallahassee, Fla.) for a 6-5 Eagle win.
Faulkner took a 4-0 lead in the game before Mobile charged from behind with a four-run eighth to go up. Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) coaxed a leadoff walk in the ninth before moving up on Te'kwaan Whyte (SR/Stone Mountain, Ga.)'s grounder to first. An intentional walk to Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.) brought Jacob Freeland (SR/Cape Coral, Fla.) to the plate. The senior subsequently stroked a double to deep right-center to plate Ragan and tie the game. After Mobile intentionally walked Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio) to set up a double play, Holmstead ripped a single to deep center to score pinch runner Myron Mebane for the win.
Holmstead went 3-for-5 on the night with two RBIs. He drove in the second run of the game when his single in the first inning plated Guzman in the first. Black's sacrifice fly in the same inning plate Whyte and Faulkner led 2-0 after one.
The Eagles scored twice more in the fourth as Holmstead made his way around from second on an error. John Michael Mathews (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) singled in the inning and scored on Ragan's base hit.
Evan Gillespie (JR/Princeton, N.J.) got the start on the mound and was sensational for most of his seven and a third innings of work. He struck out five batters and allowed only five hits over seven innings. He got in trouble in the eighth when his pitch count climbed above 100 and he walked consecutive batters before being lifted.
Heath Olive (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) worked an inning and a third without allowing any runs to pick up the win.
Faulkner (31-8, 15-1 SSAC) resumes play Saturday at 11 a.m. when it hosts Mobile for a doubleheader.
