Faulkner breaks out brooms on Mobile

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Faulkner blasted Mobile in a doubleheader Saturday to sweep the season series and keep its SSAC lead to three games.

FAULKNER 9, MOBILE 1

Antonio Frias (JR/Panama City, Panama) flirted with a no-hitter before exiting in the sixth inning of a 9-1 victory over Mobile in game one. He gave up a leadoff single to Zach Presnall in the top of the sixth to lose the no-hit bid. Presnall gave way to courtesy runner Dalton Rone, who scored on a passed ball.

The run was not nearly enough to threaten Faulkner as the Eagles hung two in the second and third innings and four in the fifth to put the game away.

Hagen Holmstead (JR/Salt Lake City, Utah) opened the scoring on a Tyler Paulsen (JR/Jolliet, Ill.) double. John Michael Mathews (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) then hit a sacrifice fly to plate Paulsen and put Faulkner up 2-0.

The Eagles stretched the lead to 4-0 in the third when Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio) singled home Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.) and an error by the left fielder allowed Jacob Freeland (SR/Cape Coral, Fla.) to score.

The Eagles erupted for a four-run rally in the fifth. Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Guzman sacrifice fly. Freeland's double plated Whyte to push the lead to 6-0. Black singled in Freeland while Jonathan Villa (JR/Ensenada, Mexico) drove in Joseph Vargas (JR/Toja Balto, P.R.) with a base hit for the 8-0 advantage. Faulkner added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Freeland's sacrifice fly plated Staton Todd (JR/Clinton, Miss.).

Frias (6-0) struck out seven over five and two-thirds for the win.

FAULKNER 9, MOBILE 2

Faulkner fell behind 1-0 early in the last game of the series before surging for a 9-2 victory. Israel Fuentes (JR/Chino Hills, Calif.) took the ball for the first time since Feb. 1. He worked one inning and struck out a batter. Presnall reached on a dropped third strike and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring the game's first run on a Kyle Friday sacrifice fly.

The Eagles did not trail for long. Guzman singled in Whyte in the home half of the first to tie the game. Holmstead drove in Guzman with a single for the 2-01 lead.

Faulkner added to the advantage in the second when Guzman singled home Ragan. Freeland followed with a double to plate Whyte and Guzman for the 5-1 cushion.

Whyte drove in Mike Battle (JR/Birmingham, Ala.) with a single in the fourth before Ragan scored on an error. Freeland drove home Whyte for the 8-2 lead. Myron Mebane (SR/Tallahassee, Fla.)'s triple in the seventh scored Ragan to set the final margin.

Kyle Laberge (JR/Mansfield, Texas) (2-0) got the win, striking out three over two and a third innings while allowing an unearned run. Brandon Suttles (SR/Panama City, Fla.) fanned five in relief over two and two-thirds. Six Faulkner pitchers combined to scatter eight hits and two walks.

Faulkner (33-8, 17-1 SSAC) returns to action Friday when it travels to Bethel.
