Freeland drives in six as Faulkner runs through SSAC tourney opener

Jacob Freeland put the offense on his back and his bat in the first round of the SSAC Tournament Wednesday night, propelling Faulkner to a 12-0 victory over Brewton-Parker. The Eagle senior tallied six RBIs on a three-hit night that included a grand slam.

Faulkner opened the scoring in the top of the third when Hagen Holmstead drew a bases-loaded walk to force home DeJhard Kimbrough. Freeland hit the next pitch over the right-center field wall for a grand slam that blew the game wide open.

The Eagles added to the lead in the fourth as Holmstead's single plated Te'kwaan Whyte. Freeland followed with a double to drive in Holmstead and Max Guzman to push the lead to 8-0.

Marcus Ragan scored on a grounder in the sixth for the ninth run. Zack Glines entered the game after midnight Thursday morning and picked up his first career hit before scoring on Myron Mebane's grounder for the 10-0 lead.. Trystin Raikes singled and scored on Bo Seccombe's double for the 11-0 advantage. John Michael Mathews singled and came around to score on Kimbrough's hit to push the lead to 12-0.

Kyle Laberge proved strong on the hill for the Eagles, striking out four while giving up only two hits and no runs. Joseph Vargas entered in the seventh, striking out six batters over three innings of work.

Top-seeded Faulkner (43-10) moves on to face Bethel University Thursday at 7 p.m.
