Box Score Faulkner overcame an early deficit Saturday to win a rain-shortened affair, earning its fifth conference tournament championship and fourth under the direction of Patrick McCarthy.
Mobile struck first Saturday in the bottom half of the first inning when Christian Snow launched a three-run shot to center to stake the Rams to a 3-0 lead. Faulkner fired right back as Marcus Ragan (SR/Vicksburg, Miss.) doubled in Troy Black (SO/Dayton, Ohio) and DeJhard Kimbrough (JR/Atlanta, Ga.) in the top of the second to narrow it to 3-2.
Miscues plagued Mobile in the fifth inning and the Eagles stood ready to take advantage. Marcus Ragan reached on an error and stole second before advancing to third on another error. He made his way home with the tying run on a double play ball.
Faulkner took the lead in the top of the sixth when Jonathan Villa (JR/Ensenada, Mexico) hit a two-out single to right, driving in Max Guzman (JR/Miami, Fla.) and Troy Black. Kimbrough made it home on a throwing error to put the Eagles up 6-3.
Snow drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to push home Sam Turner and leave the deficit at 6-4. Faulkner got that run back in the seventh as Sam Anthony (JR/Columbus, Ga.)'s single plated Mike Battle (JR/Birmingham, Ala.).
Alex Carrillo (SR/West Covina, Calif.) retired the Rams in order in the bottom of the seventh, completing his third inning of relief work. The teams immediately left the field following the final out of the frame as the game went into a lightning delay. Approximately an hour later, officials called the game.
Israel Fuentes (JR/Chino Hills, Calif.) struck out five batters over four innings of work while scattering seven hits and allowing three runs. Carrillo fanned three and walked three over three to get the win.
Villa, Jacob Freeland and Evan Gillespie earned SSAC All-Tournament honors. Freeland won the Most Valuable Player award.
Faulkner (46-10) will play again Monday, May 13 in the NAIA Opening Round. Teams for the Montgomery Bracket at Faulkner University will be announced May 9 at 4 p.m.
