Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner did the bulk of its damage in a six-run second inning Saturday night and Antonio Frias (SR/Panama City, Panama) made the offense stand up in an 8-4 victory over Northwestern Ohio.
The Eagles sent 10 batters to the plate in the second, opening the frame with a Shawn Ross (JR/Fajada, Puerto Rico) single. After John Michael Mathews (SR/Birmingham, Ala.) replaced Ross on the base paths with a fielder's choice, Sam Anthony (SR/Columbus, Ga.) took a hit-by-pitch. Justin Lara (SR/Coconut Creek, Fla.) drew a walk to load the bases. Eriq White (SR/Snellville, Ga.) then stroked a ground ball that resulted in an error. Mathews scored on a the grounder while Anthony made it home on the bobble. Isaac Phillips (JR/Powder Springs, Ga.) then grounded to second to plate Lara for the 3-0 lead. Hagen Holmstead (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) followed with a single to drive in White. Jonathan Villa (SR/Ensenada, Mexico) turned in a single of his own to score Holmstead before Mario Moralez Jr. (JR/Houston, Texas) notched a hit that pushed home courtesy runner DeJhard Kimbrough (SR/Atlanta, Ga.).
UNOH got back three runs in the top of the third as it coaxed two walks and a hit-by-pitch to open the frame. Hunter James then singled to left to score Juan Flores. Yadi Rivera singled to right to drive in Shakur Jackson. Caleb Flores later had a sacrifice fly to plate Don Goodes.
Faulkner added an insurance run in the bottom of the third when Anthony walked and scored on an error.
The teams traded runs again in the sixth inning. Rivera scored in the top half of the frame. The Eagles added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth when an error allowed Rashad Lucas (SO/Panama City, Fla.) to score.
Brett McEldowney took the loss for UNOH, allowing one earned run over four innings of work while striking out four.
Frias (3-0) fanned eight batters over six innings of work while scattering six hits and allowing four earned runs.
Faulkner (9-1) will host the remainder of the three-game series Sunday in a doubleheader that begins at 12:30 p.m.
