Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – A game defined by runs came down to the final moments Saturday before Faulkner proved unable to make the final climb in a 78-74 loss to Brewton-Parker. The Lady Eagles charged out of the blocks and hung 24 points in the first quarter to hold a 12-point lead at the end of 10 minutes of play. BPC answered with a 15-2 run that culminated with a Sy-Marieona Williams three to put the Crusaders up 27-26.
Brewton-Parker then opened the third quarter with an 11-0 run to stretch its lead all the way to 46-32. Undeterred, the Lady Eagles began chipping away. Faulkner mounted a 12-5 run over a three-minute stretch in the middle of the third quarter that sliced the deficit to 51-47.
Four points separated the teams as the fourth quarter opened before two quick Crusader buckets put BPC up nine. A
Micala Fisanick bucket with 6:38 left in the game pulled Faulkner to within one. Brewton-Parker answered with an 8-0 run over the next 2:23 to go back up by nine.
Yet again, Faulkner refused to go away.
Ashlyn Adkins drained a three with 2:38 left to put Faulkner down six. She then connected on a free throw 19 seconds later to narrow it to five. After a
Channing Gafford free throw set the deficit at four.
Jacie Andrews scored in the waning moments to cut the score to 76-74.
After a BPC trip to the free throw line yielded no points, the Lady Eagles had a chance to tie or take the lead before a layup attempt rolled off the iron. Brewton-Parker tacked on a free throw to push it to 77-74 before the visiting team got one final attempt to tie the game. A three-point attempt caromed off the iron and all but sealed the final fate for Faulkner.
"There is really good basketball in our league. You have to show up ready to defend and compete," Faulkner Head Coach
Reed Sutton said. "Brewton-Parker is a great team and deserve credit for playing better than us this weekend."
The Lady Eagles shot 53 percent from the floor and won the rebounding battle 32-25. Brewton-Parker knocked down 11 threes at a 46 percent clip to power its scoring effort.
Adkins topped Faulkner with 18 points to go along with seven rebounds. Andrews added 15 points and four rebounds. Holland notched 14 points and three boards.
Faulkner (3-7, 0-2 SSAC) returns to action Monday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Middle Georgia State.
