Faulkner rallies late to beat Thomas

File Photo
Box Score THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Faulkner overcame a couple of miscues and a pair of deficits to beat Thomas 11-5 Friday afternoon. The Eagles fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the third when a leadoff double, a single, and an error resulted in two Nighthawk runs.

The deficit proved short-lived as Alex Arauz ripped his first homer as an Eagle in the top of the fourth to cut it to 2-1. Sam Anthony then reached on an error with two outs before stealing second base. Anthony made it home on a Justin Lara RBI single to tie the game.

Thomas rallied with two outs to retake the lead in the home half of the seventh, carrying a 3-2 advantage into the eighth inning. Faulkner wasted no further time asserting itself.

The Eagles used three singles to load the bases before Anthony's RBI fielder's choice pushed Isaac Phillips home to set the game 3-3. Tommy Reyes-Cruz followed with a double to right to plate Anthony and Ben Hargis for the 5-3 Faulkner lead.

After Mike Battle set down the Nighthawks in order in the eighth, Faulkner mustered another two-out rally in the ninth. Phillips took a hit-by-pitch with two away in the frame before a Shawn Ross walk. Arauz singled in Phillips to make it 6-3 before Stafford Quinnelly drove in both Faulkner baserunners with a single. Anthony followed with a double to score Quinnelly before Reyes-Cruz singled in the Faulkner centerfielder. Bo Seccombe tripled to send in Reyes-Cruz and cap the scoring for the Eagles.

Arauz finished with a three-hit game while Jonathan Villa, Anthony and Reyes-Cruz had two hits apiece.

July Sosa struck out nine batters over seven innings of work while scattering five hits and two earned runs to move to 2-0 on the season.

Faulkner (7-0) is set to play Thomas in a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
