Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner got the best outing of the season from one of its new staff aces and paired it with enough offense to take the 8-4 victory over Judson University Friday night.
Game one of the series saw
July Sosa frustrate Judson bats for seven innings while he struck out 11 over seven innings. The blemishes on the hurler's line included a hit, an earned run and a pair of hit batsmen.
Stafford Quinnelly finished the game, striking out the only batter he faced while inheriting a two-on, two-out situation that had the tying run on deck. The sequence handed Quinnelly his second save of the season.
Faulkner got the scoring started in the home half of the first when
Isaac Phillips singled to center, stole second and scored on a
Shawn Ross RBI single. The Eagles added to the lead in the second as
Sam Anthony walked and
Justice Lucas reached on a fielder's choice ahead of a
John Michael Mathews three-run shot for his first homer of the season to move the score to 4-0.
After Sosa struck out the side in the top of the sixth, Faulkner got the bats going again in the home half.
Justin Lara singled to left and promptly stole second base. Consecutive walks to Mathews and
Jonathan Villa loaded the bases for Phillips. The Faulkner leftfielder singled in a pair of runs to move the lead to 6-0. After an
Alex Arauz walk, Anthony singled home two more runs to cap the scoring for the Eagles.
Faulkner (8-1) hosts Judson for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
