Box Score MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Faulkner overcame a sluggish start Thursday, scoring five unanswered runs to beat Brewton-Parker 9-5 in game one of a three-game series. The Eagles fell behind in the top of the first inning as Benjamin Harris ripped a two-run shot to right-center to stake the Barons to a 2-0 lead. Zachary Wilson added to the advantage with a leadoff homer in the second to leave Brewton-Parker up 3-0.
The Faulkner offense finally came to life in the top of the fourth when
Alex Arauz singled home
Tommy Reyes-Cruz to narrow the deficit to 3-1.
Isaac Phillips followed with a two-run jack to right to tie the game.
Justice Lucas later singled in
Sam Anthony to put Faulkner up 4-3.
The longball benefited the home team again in the bottom of the fourth when Jordan Rahn stroked a two-run dinger to center to put Brewton back up 5-4.
The lead was short-lived as the Eagles rallied for five runs in the fifth to cap the scoring on the day. Back-to-back singles from
Jonathan Villa and Reyes-Cruz ahead of a
Shawn Ross walk loaded the bases for Arauz with nobody out. The third baseman then hit a 1-2 pitch to left to drive in all three runs and give Faulkner the 7-5 lead. Phillips followed with a single to score Arauz before making his way home on a throwing error.
July Sosa (4-1) worked around the three round-trippers to go a complete game with 14 strikeouts over nine innings of work. He allowed nine hits and issued two walks in the win.
The Faulkner offense tallied 12 hits including three from Arauz and two apiece from Lucas and Phillips. Arauz had four RBI while Phillips notched three. Lucas accounted for the other Faulkner RBI.
Faulkner (13-2, 3-1 SSAC) heads back to Mount Vernon, Ga. Saturday for a doubleheader set to start at 1 p.m. CST.
