Antonio Frias turned in a career performance and the offense provided plenty of run support as Faulkner beat Brewton-Parker 11-1 in the second round of the SSAC Baseball Championship Friday.
Frias struck out 13 batters over six innings of work to match a career high dating back to his second Faulkner start back in 2019. Frias (10-0) fanned every hitter in the Baron order at least one time on the way to the victory. The feat marked the 11th time in the southpaw's 33 career starts that he has struck out double digit batters.
For its part, the Eagle order wasted few opportunities. Faulkner opened the scoring in the third when
Shawn Ross singled in
Sam Anthony.
Isaac Phillips later drove in Ross with a single to push it to 2-0.
Tommy Reyes-Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to left-center to plate
Alex Arauz and leave Faulkner up 3-0.
Brewton-Parker's Austin Mealor hit an 0-2 offering off the foul pole in right to briefly cut the deficit to 3-1. Following the homer, Frias then struck out eight of the next nine batters he faced including seven in a row. He exited the game after striking out the last batter of the sixth, leaving his career total at 266.
The Eagles added to the 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth when Anthony scored on a wild throw. Arauz then singled in
Isaiah Brooks. Phillips tripled down the rightfield line to plate Arauz before scoring a run of his own on a wild pitch.
Justin Lara singled home
John Michael Mathews before Reyes-Cruz made it home on a wild throw.
Shawn Ross hit the second pitch of the fifth inning well beyond the left field wall to move the lead to 11-1.
Faulkner (34-7) moves on to 4 p.m. Saturday to host the winner of Brewton-Parker and Middle Georgia State.
