Box Score Faulkner's run through the 2021 Avista NAIA World Series came to an end Wednesday night with a 15-10 loss to Georgia Gwinnett. The Eagles gave up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning but appeared ready to stay in it with a solo homer from
Shawn Ross in the home half of the inning. After starting pitcher
Tyberius Correa limited the Grizzlies' damage to the just one run in the top of the second, Faulkner got two out hits from
Jonathan Villa and
Sam Anthony in the bottom of the inning but could not cash in the opportunity. From there, the wheels fell off for the Eagles. They utilized three pitchers to get through the third inning while surrendering seven runs and falling behind 10-1.
The Eagles tried to scratch back into it in the bottom of the inning as Ross hit his second homer of the contest to lead off the frame.
Alex Arauz walked ahead of an
Isaac Phillips single before
Justin Lara's hit plated the pair to cut it to 10-4. Faulkner would get no closer.
Georgia Gwinnett went on to add a pair of runs in the fifth, two more in the eighth and one in the ninth to move the lead to 15-4. The Eagles tallied 16 hits but stranded eight runners in the loss.
Anthony hit a homer to straightaway center in the ninth to cap his Faulkner career. The swing sparked a six-run rally in Faulkner's last at-bat of the season. A pair of errors on an Arauz grounder in the ninth allowed
Ben Hargis to score, cutting it to 15-6. Ross, who singled in the ninth, scored on a wild pitch to leave it at 15-7. Arauz made his way home on another wild pitch to set the score at 15-8.
Bo Seccombe then blasted a two-run shot in the final at-bat of his Eagle tenure to make it 15-10.
Mike Battle turned in the strongest of the Eagle pitching performances in the final appearance of his collegiate career. He struck out three while scattering four hits in three innings of work and allowing just one run.
Faulkner ends its season at 40-12.
