Eagles unable to overcome early woes in loss to Reinhardt

Box Score WALESKA, Ga. – A rocky start on the mound left Faulkner trailing for most of the game Thursday as it fell to Reinhardt 9-7 on day one of the Southeast Rumble. The visiting Eagles wasted little time getting started as they took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Sammy De La Cruz singled to start the game before stealing second and third. Shawn Ross drove him in with a double center to stake Brayan Garcia to a lead before he ever took to the hill. Ross then stole third ahead of a Justice Lucas sacrifice fly to center to push the lead to 2-0.

Reinhardt took the lead swiftly in the home half of the first when Jarrett Burney doubled home Tucker Zdunich, Dawson Johns, and Jacob Profit. The hosting Eagles then added a run in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth to take a commanding 8-2 advantage.

Faulkner scratched out another run in the fifth when Ross doubled in Evan Gilliam to narrow it to 8-3. Reinhardt answered with a run in the home half of the inning to leave the lead at six.
Faulkner started its comeback effort in the bottom of the sixth when Alex Arauz singled and scored on a Peyton Davis double.

Faulkner got back in to the game in the eighth when Kam Wells singled in Davis. De La Cruz and Wells scored on a pair of errors to cut it to 9-7. Arauz drew a one-out walk in the ninth to twice bring the tying run to the plate but Faulkner failed to put another runner aboard.

Garcia (0-1) scuffled in three innings of work, allowing nine hits and eight earned runs. Chance Denson showed himself well in relief, holding Reinhardt to one earned run over four innings of work. The reliever's 2022 campaign now consists of two earned runs allowed over 7.2 innings of work. Aaron Hammer finished Thursday's game with a scoreless inning.
Faulkner (2-2) resumes play Thursday at 2 p.m. when they take on St. Thomas in the continuation of the Southeast Rumble.
