Sweep starts SSAC slate

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner claimed two big 6-1 wins to open conference play against (RV) Blue Mountain in the SSAC Games of the Week Friday afternoon at Wynn Field.

FAULKNER 6, BLUE MOUNTAIN 1

The Lady Eagles capitalized on a couple Lady Topper errors in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead and never lost steam behind another dominant outing from Meagan Schwieterman. Erika Mitchell started the inning with a double, her third of the week. Mitchell delivered in Tara Ammons who found a double herself in the third to increase the score to 3-0.

A throwing error from Blue Mountain allowed two more runs to score in the fourth after base hits from Nicole Morrison and Brianna Cagle. The next frame BMC pulled one back off a Faulkner error but Schwieterman turned in two three-up three-down innings to seal her fifth win of the season with seven strikeouts and no earned runs, dropping her ERA to .53. Morrison's triple in the sixth backed by Taylor Ammons's single scored an insurance run.

Caity Jo Lee, Mitchell and Morrison all had multiple hits while Morrison touched home three times in the contest.

FAULKNER 6, BLUE MOUNTAIN 1

Three first inning runs was enough in front of a stellar performance from Katelynn Inness for the doubleheader sweep as four of the first five batters reached with three doubling.

Shelbie Burbage drew a leadoff walk and promptly swiped second–her 15th stolen base of the season, ranking 17th in the country. Lee traded places with her with an RBI double before advancing to third on a groundout. Gracie Pittman and Mitchell hit back-to-back doubles to score the second and third runs. Madison McKee's RBI single in the third added another, scoring Tara Ammons from second. Faulkner added its final two runs in the fourth with singles from Lee and Pittman.

Blue Mountain got one back in the fifth, but similarly to her fellow pitcher in game one, Inness closed out with two three-up three down innings. Inness also struck out seven over the complete game win and allowed just three hits and no earned runs.

Lee and Tara Ammons each racked up three hits while Pittman, Mitchell and Kaileigh Harrison picked up two each. Pittman and Lee had two RBIs each.

The Lady Eagles take on Stillman Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in a rescheduled contest due to the forecasted rain during the originally scheduled time.
