Lady Eagles stave off late Mobile run, snap three-game skid

MOBILE, Ala. –Faulkner snapped a three-game losing streak in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon with a 63-60 win road win over the Rams of Mobile. Reed Sutton called his final timeout with 10.9 seconds left in a tie ballgame. The only coach the program has ever known drew up one of his most memorable late-game sequences to lead to the game-winning basket.

Kinlee Varnell fired the inbound pass to Angela Grant, who had a defender sealed in the post. Morgan Holland cut to the basket around Grant's shoulder, took the pass from the fifth-year post player and laid it in to put her team up 62-60.

Following a Mobile timeout, the Rams got two looks at the basket but saw their hopes dashed as Grant cleared the defensive rebound with less than a second left. Grant knocked down one of her two free throw attempts to set the final margin.

The Lady Eagles led by as many as 13 in the game and appeared ready to run away with the contest when they were up 42-29 with three minutes left in the third quarter. Mobile came to life in the final 13 minutes of action, scoring 31 points over that stretch. A 25-8 Ram run that culminated at the 7:06 mark of the fourth quarter helped Mobile off the deck and set it on top 54-50.

Faulkner equalized the game again with a pair of Varnell free throws and an Evaiah Burrows layup. The teams traded buckets for the next five minutes before the Holland basket that proved the game-winner. The Lady Eagles shot 37 percent from the floor and 18.8 percent from three while taking the rebound battle 40-30. Faulkner forced Mobiile to run the ball over 18 times and outpaced Mobile 16-3 in points off turnovers.

Burrows had 14 points to lead Faulkner while Varnell and Holland finished with 12 apiece. Grant had her 33rd career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Faulkner (12-4, 4-2 SSAC) travels to Blue Mountain Monday for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
