Faulkner flexes hustle in SSAC road win

Box Score COCHRAN, Ga. – Faulkner snapped a six-game slide with a gritty performance Saturday that saw it record a 64-56 road win over Middle Georgia State. The Lady Eagles never trailed in the second half and did not trail by more than six in the effort. Faulkner hung its 64 points without making a single three-point attempt in the game.

Instead, the Lady Eagles got work done in the ancillary categories and shared the ball with remarkable efficiency, notching 19 assists on 27 made baskets. Faulkner took the rebounding battle 39-25 including a 15-7 advantage on the offensive glass. That allowed Faulkner to outpace MGA 13-4 in second chance points. The Lady Eagles also took points in the paint 28-24, points off turnovers 7-4, and bench points 18-13.

Morgan Holland gave her team the lead for good on an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:59 left in the second as she knocked down a jumper and made the ensuing free throw to put Faulkner up 26-25. The sequence highlighted a personal 7-3 run for the senior. Ella Jane Connell ripped a jumper through in the closing seconds of the second quarter to send the Lady Eagles to the locker room with a 30-25 lead.

Holland continued her offensive outburst in the third quarter, hanging 11 points in the period. A Nequoia Adams jumper early in the fourth opened the Faulkner lead to 52-37, its largest margin of the day.

"Any win is a good win right now, but road wins in the SSAC are hard to come by. Proud of our kids today. It is not easy to get up at 4:30 am, sit in a bus for three hours, and play with the energy and defensive intensity we played with today," Faulkner Head Coach Reed Sutton said. "We were great on the offensive glass as well. Our team had a great will to win. Morgan was dominant today. Nequoia really ran the show well on both ends. Ella Jane was a huge X- factor for us! We are excited to get back to Time Davis on Monday for another tough opponent."

Holland finished her day with 31 points and eight rebounds, making 12 of her 18 shots from the floor and cashing in seven of 10 free throw looks. Connell contributed eight points in just 11 minutes of action. Adams dished eight assists while Ruthie Smith had nine rebounds.

Faulkner (4-8, 1-3 SSAC) hosts William Carey Monday at 5:30 p.m.
