GULF SHORES, Ala. – Faulkner takes both in a strong day two at the Gulf Coast Sportsplex Saturday as the Lady Eagles swept the day with a 4-2 win over Williams Baptist and 9-2 win over Xavier in the Gulf Coast Invitational.
FAULKNER 4, WILLIAMS BAPTIST 2
The Lady Eagles put away Williams Baptist scoring four runs in the first four to take the lead and never lose it.
Eavie Polk was beaned by a pitch in the first at bat to reach first, Kaleigh Harrison dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance Polk to second,
Anna Purvis's groundout advanced Polk to third, bringing up
Gracie Pittman. Pittman launched her third homer of the season starting the scoring with two runs in the frame. The scoring resumed in the bottom of the fourth with Pittman reaching first on a misread from the pitcher,
Erika Mitchell followed up with a walk, putting runners on first and second. A wild pitch advanced both Mitchell and Pittman allowing
Colby Adams to drop a 2 RBI single in the gap in right field.
Kaitlyn Inness was strong in relief after a tough outing for
Ivey Hill, working out of a bases loaded, and no outs jam in the top of the fourth frame with three consecutive outs retiring the side swinging. Inness struck out five over 12 in four innings of work.
FAULKNER 9, XAVIER 2
The second game of the day included an explosive first inning with five scored. Polk opened the frame with a single to left field, followed by a bunt single from Harrison that advanced Polk to second, both advanced to second and third respectively on an uncontrolled throw from the pitcher. Purvis hit a double deep into left field to drive in Polk and Harrison for 2 RBI. Mitchell singled to second base advancing Purvis to third, Anna Marie Stooksbury reached first on a misread from the shortstop and drove Purvis home and advanced Mitchell to second.
Abby Terrell dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance Stooksbury and Mitchell into scoring position.
Haley Ingram hit an RBI single scoring Mitchell and advancing Stooksbury Ingram swiped second and Stooksbury swiped home to bring up the score 5-0.
Scoring for the lady eagles would continue in the second and third frame with an RBI single from Purvis and a throwing error from the centerfielder to score Purvis. Harrison dropped a sacrifice bunt in the third to advance Hicks who scored after the first baseman overthrew the ball. In the top of the sixth frame Purvis singled to left center Mitchell reached on a fielder's choice and Purvis advanced on a misread from short. Stooksbury hit a high sacrifice fly to centerfield to advance Purvis to third, the final run scored from a misread ball at short allowing Terrell to reach first Mitchell to get second and Purvis to cross home plate.
Chloe Davidson pitched all seven innings striking out five while only allowing five hits and two runs earning the second win in her collegiate career.
The Lady Eagles take the field for day three of the Gulf Coast Invitational at 9 a.m. Sunday against Houston-Victoria.
