MONTGOMERY, Ala. - On an emotional night to open the home slate for the Eagles, Faulkner (1-0-1) scored early and often and remembered their teammate
Yuri Vasconcelos by scoring five goals, the number he was likely to don this fall in a 5-0 shutout of Pensacola Christian Saturday night in front of a raucous Billy D. Hilyer Stadium to remain unbeaten after the first two matches.
Antoine Marques ignited the scoreboard firing home a cross from Higor França in the 13th minute before one of the most touching moments of the night as he raced to the sideline and grabbed his warmup shirt that read "Forever Yuri" and raised to the crowd that thundered in cheers louder than the reaction to the opener.Â
Set pieces then ruled the half for the Eagles as
Gabriel Rokbrand delivered brilliant set pieces including a 29th minute corner that was dropped perfectly onto the head of
Gabriel Dias to double the advantage. Five minutes later following a foul called on and yellow awarded to the Pensacola Christian goalkeeper Bryce Hammond, Rokbrand curled a great shot on frame that was met with an even better save but
Thomas Buijs read it perfectly and tucked it away. Buijs, wearing the aforementioned number five jersey, scored the first goal of his career.Â
In the second half,
Julio Souza found the ball in the middle of the box during a scramble and slotted home the fourth goal of the night and the first of his Faulkner career in the 67th minute. He would not stay at one very long as just two minutes
Joe Wilkinson's first touch as an Eagle was a beautiful pass to
Franco Israel down the left wing who found Pedro Aragão who later linked with Souza who dribbled around the keeper and scored to finalize the scoreline.Â
Faulkner outshot the visiting Eagles 23-3 and allowed just one shot on goal.Â
The Eagle defense has allowed just six shots on goal and no goals from open play in the first 180 minutes of the season.Â
Faulkner travels across town to face Huntingdon for the first time since 2011 Wednesday at 5 p.m.
