Long ball takes Lady Eagles past Skyhawks

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In a battle between two conference champions last year, the Lady Eagles defeated league newcomers Point 72-58 in SSAC action Saturday afternoon in Tine Davis Gymnasium behind sharp shooting from deep.

Morgan Holland's three pointer with 6:52 to go in the first quarter put the Lady Eagles ahead just 10 seconds after last season's AAC champion, Point, took their only lead of the day 10 seconds prior from the charity stripe. The triple was one of four in the first quarter to take a 22-16 lead into the second.

The Lady Eagles sparked a 10-3 run over 3:37 early of the second quarter to get the lead to double figures. Faulkner's lead got as high as 20 halfway in the third after a 13-4 run spanning the last 20 seconds of the third and 5:32 to go in the game to ice it away.

Holland led the team with 15 points and Neely Johns added 12 with both connecting on three threes. Nequoia Adams was one rebound shy of a 12 point double-double. Ruthie Smith and Dee Guinn added 11 a piece. Faulkner shot 55.6 percent from deep to get the statistical edge.

"I thought we put together our most complete game of the year today against a top notch opponent in Point," Head Coach Reed Sutton said. "We started the game well. We shot it well at all levels. We had balanced scoring. We competed well defensively and on the glass. We are very happy with the win and hope to continue building our confidence each time we play."

The Lady Eagles improve to 10-9 overall and 6-3 in SSAC play to hold the third seed by a half game heading into a big match up Tuesday evening at 4:30 central with Brewton-Parker who's tied for fourth.
