Lady Eagles pick up key SSAC road victory

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Faulkner handed Brewton-Parker its first home loss of the season Tuesday night, downing the Barons 73-56 in a key SSAC contest. Nequoia Adams parlayed an Ella Jane Co0nnell pass into an assist with 5:31 left in the second quarter to put Faulkner up 27-26. The Lady Eagles scarcely looked back from there. The make started a 16-5 run that lasted the duration of the second period and ended with a Bridget Johnson jumper off a Neely Johns helper, running the Faulkner advantage to nine points at halftime.

The Lady Eagles grew the lead to as many as 17 in the third quarter and thwarted the Barons' final threat in the fourth frame, never allowing the home team to draw any closer than 10.

"We are very excited about the win tonight. Brewton-Parker has a national level program that we deeply respect. They have been very difficult to beat over the last few years," Faulkner Head Coach Reed Sutton said. "I was very happy with our execution defensively tonight and our balanced rebounding. All of our starters had at least six rebounds. We also had balanced scoring while attacking the basket well tonight, outscoring them 50-18 in the paint."

Faulkner won the rebound battle 46-32. The Lady Eagles won points off turnovers 18-6 and second chance points 14-4 in addition to their paint dominance.
Ruthie Smith topped Faulkner with 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in 27 minutes of action. Adams finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, two assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Morgan Holland added 12 points and eight rebounds.

"I thought we got good bench contributions. Dee Guinn continues to provide a spark for us. Our bench post players produced well. Olivia Chadwell played well off the bench versus their zone and Bridget Johnson played well off the bench versus their man-to-man defense. Ella Jane (Connell) really played solid today. She hit a big three-point shot and had three assists in 10 minutes. She was very productive when we had some foul issues in the second quarter," Sutton said. "We look forward to being back home on Saturday and will keep working hard each day to keep the winning momentum going."

Faulkner (11-9, 7-3 SSAC) sits in third place in the conference following the victory and stretches its current win streak to three games. The Lady Eagles, winners of eight of their last nine games, host Middle Georgia State Saturday at noon.
