Faulkner goes 1-1 in midweek split doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Faulkner baseball went 1-1 in a non-traditional, split doubleheader Tuesday. The Eagles took game one of the day from Freed-Hardeman before falling in game two to No. 6 Reinhardt.

FAULKNER 8, FREED-HARDEMAN 5

The Eagles scored the final three runs to take the opener from sister school Freed-Hardeman 8-5. After the Lions plated three runs in the seventh to tie the game at five apiece, Faulkner scratched out a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to go back on top. Jeyson Polanco singled to center and Edrien Martinez doubled to left-center to put two in scoring position with nobody out. Kenny Di Clemente grounded out to drive in one run before Eduarny Martinez double down the line in left to get the other home for the 7-5 advantage. Orlando Lorduy added an insurance run on a solo homer in the eighth before Jordan Destefano retired the side in the ninth for his second save of the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring in the third when John-Michael Riley singled, stole second and scored on an Edrien Martinez hit to left. Faulkner gave itself some breathing room in the fourth when it plated three runs.

Luis Lizarraga reached on an error, advanced on a Christian Webb single and scored on a wild pitch. Tevin Landrum and Anthony Bassett Torres later scored on a throwing error for the 4-0 lead.

FHU pushed three across in the sixth to get back into the game before Faulkner found its swing in the sixth. Juan Trinidad drew a walk and gave way to Torres, who scored on a Riley double to make it 5-3.

Roberto Romero started the game, striking out three over three scoreless innings while allowing two hits and a walk. Mat Mayer (1-1) worked one inning for the win.

REINHARDT 10, FAULKNER 0

Faulkner's second game of the day saw Reinhardt swing a big stick early as Nash Crowell hit a solo homer to left in the first inning. Luca Boscarino followed suit with one of his own in the second to make it 2-0. The home team was able to keep the game within reach until the fifth when Crowell launched a three-run shot to left center and Barry Eiseman delivered a two-run blast to right. Eiseman drove in two more runs with a single in the seventh to cap the scoring.

The offensive output from Reinhardt was more than enough to back up the efforts of Adam Christopher, who struck out four over 4.1 innings of work while giving up just one hit and issuing two walks. Logan Lynch followed with 2.2 innings of scoreless work with just one hit allowed.

Faulkner's two hits were singles off the bat of Di Clemente and Dariel Colón. The home Eagles used six pitchers to cover nine innings with Grant Blalock working a scoreless two-thirds of an inning to cap the day.

Faulkner (8-2) opens SSAC play Friday when it begins a three-game series against Tennessee Southern.
