Box Score 2 DAPHNE, Ala. – Faulkner got the bats working early and often Thursday as it swept a doubleheader in a first-time matchup with United States Sports Academy. The Lady Eagles tallied 24 hits and 27 runs on the afternoon.
FAULKNER 9, USSA 1
Addyson Jarman started the scoring in the third inning when she roped a solo homer to center field. That swing served as a prelude to what would prove a massive day for the freshman from Marbury.
Kelbi Johnson added to the Faulkner lead in the fourth when she dropped down a bunt single that plated
Madelyn Becker to make it 2-0. Johnson and Abbey Terrell then scored on an error for the 4-0 lead.
Mandi Hart and
Chloe Davidson each scored on another error later in the inning to stretch the advantage to six runs.
After USSA got on the board in the fifth, Jarman doubled home
Anna Catherine Segrest before, herself, making it home on a
Gracie Pittman double.
Sarah Williams put the game in run-rule territory with a sixth-inning single that scored Pittman to move the lead to 9-1.
Reece Patterson (4-0) did the bulk of the work in the circle as she worked five innings while scattering seven hits and issuing four walks. She struck out three hitters before giving way to
Hailey O'Brien, who worked one hitless inning with a strikeout.
FAULKNER 18, USSA 8
After going 2-for-4 in the first game to keep her season batting average at .500, Jarman did something truly special in the nightcap. The centerfielder hit for the cycle to finish her afternoon 6-for-10 with two doubles, two homers, a triple, two stolen bases, five RBIs and five runs scored.
Davidson got Faulkner on the board in the first when she scored on an error. It remained 1-0 until the second when Becker scored on Davidson's sacrifice fly to center. Jarman started her quest toward history when she led off the third with a triple to right, notching the rarest component of the cycle. She then made it home on Williams' bunt to push the lead to 3-0.
A bases-load walk to Johnson plated
Kensley Wesley to stretch it to 4-0.
USSA got two runs back in the home half of the third to make it a game again. Faulkner then broke things open in the fourth. Jarman doubled on a line drive to left to ignite the action in the fourth. She scored on an error to push it to 5-2.
Eavie Polk scored on a Terrell sacrifice for the 6-2 advantage. Becker followed with a double to left to drive in Williams and make it 7-2. Becker then scored on a passed ball to leave the Lady Eagles up 8-2 through three and a half.
Davidson started the offense in the fifth with a leadoff single. She scored on a two-out double from Wesley. The game got into run-rule territory in the fifth when Williams reached on an erorr that allowed Wesley to score.
USSA rallied for four runs in the home half of the fifth to narrow it to 10-6 and keep the game alive.
Becker, Johnson and
Campbell Hecklinski started the sixth with consecutive singles that loaded the bases. Davidson hit a grounder to drive in one run before Segrest dropped down a bunt to plate another. Jarman then legged out an infield single to plate Hecklinski and draw one hit away from the cycle. USSA pushed two more across in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 13-8.
Terrell started the seventh with a single before Becker tripled to left to make it 14-8. Becker then scored on an error before Davidson singled to right. Segrest dropped down another sacrifice to drive in Hecklinski for the 16-8 lead and bring Jarman to the plate one final time.
The freshman fouled off the first pitch she saw and took the next two before launching the ball beyond the center field fence for a two-run shot that set the final margin at 18-8.
Lana Atkins issued a leadoff walk in the seventh and then retired the next three to close the game with two innings of scoreless work. O'Brien (3-1) worked five innings and struck out two for the win.
Faulkner (7-1) returns to action Tuesday, March 4 when it hosts Campbellsville to open a nine-game week that culminates at the Gulf Coast Invitational.
