MONTGOMERY, Ala. - UT Southern (17-3, 2-0 SSAC) got the bats going early in both ends of the doubleheader, rattling the starting pitchers for Faulkner (15-6, 2-2 SSAC) on the way to a sweep at Wynn Field.
UT Southern 4, Faulkner 1
After a leadoff groundout, the Firehawks got two on board with a walk and a single before three straight wild pitches brought both home, ending Addison Moseley's day. Reece Patterson ended the first frame with a pair of swinging strikeouts to limit the damage with her team trailing 2-0. Chloe Davidson led off with a double to right center, and Addyson Jarman doubled to left center to plate the former and cut the deficit in half. That would be all the scoring for the Lady Eagles in this conference series between nationally receiving votes squads.
A leadoff double combined with a sac bunt and an RBI single got the run back for the Firehawks. Mikayla McCain, who scored on the second inning play, then hit an RBI double in the next frame to set the final score. Patterson pitched 6.2 innings in relief with five strikeouts.
UT Southern 7, Faulkner 0
The UTS offense had an even bigger offensive output in Game Two, racking up 14 hits, five more than the Lady Eagles had in the entire doubleheader. Haley McDaniel started off a 4-4 game with two runs scored with a leadoff single down the left field line and opening the scoring on an RBI single from McCain. An RBI double scored the leadoff runner in the second inning as well, and a walk and a single loaded the bases. Alaina Grace King scored two with a double to right and Evi Edwards followed with a two-run homer on the next swing for a 6-0 lead after two innings, putting Abrianna Davis in the first true trouble she has faced in her freshman season. Her day finished in the third with a pair of walks and an RBI double. It was the first loss she has taken in seven starts this year.
Lana Atkins entered in relief for the first time this season and pitched for the first time since the Talladega series. After allowing a walk to load the bases, she induced a popup to end the inning. She would hold the Firehawks scoreless for the last 4.1 innings with three walks and four hits allowed while striking out three. Ella Singletary of UTS threw a gem, improving to 8-1 on the year with five strikeouts and allowing four hits and two walks while maintaining the shutout.
Faulkner is back home for another SSAC series between receiving votes teams as it takes on Blue Mountain Christian at 1 and 3 pm.
