MONTGOMERY, Ala. – On a night when they were needed the most, the Faulkner bats came through in a major way Friday. The Eagles put up crooked numbers in the first, second and seventh innings to notch a 16-9 victory over Blue Mountain Christian.
Faulkner lost starting pitcher
Brandon Napier in the second inning while trailing 5-4. From there, the offense took over.
Jeyson Polanco doubled to left center to plate
Jordan Carter and
Orlando Arellano. C.J. Robertson then singled through the right side to drive in Edrien Martinez and Polanco for the 8-5 advantage.
Alex Gonzalez's foul out to third base turned into a sacrifice fly when
Anthony Bassett Torres scored from third to make it 9-5.
After the Toppers plated two in the fourth to cut it to 9-7, the Eagles blew the game wide open with seven runs in the seventh. C.J. Robertson scored on a wild pitch.
Marlon Oviedo tripled to right to plate Gonzalez. After Oviedo scored on a wild pitch,
Jimmy Perez singled to right to drive in Carter to make it 13-7. Martinez blasted a two-run homer to right before Torres singled home
Tevin Landrum to make it 16-7.
The combination of
Marshall Robinson and
Avery Shelton worked seven and a third innings and allowed just one earned run. Shelton highlighted with five innings of work that included five strikeouts.
Martinez finished a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and a homer while driving in two. The performance stretched his on-base streak to 14 consecutive plate appearances.
Faulkner (23-17, 10-9 SSAC) wraps the series Saturday with a doubleheader.
