WEST POINT, Ga. - The Lady Eagles (29-12, 13-7 SSAC) polished off a Battle of I-85 season sweep of Point (11-27, 3-17 SSAC) at West Point Park Softball Field on Saturday to put a bow on a five-series road stretch. The performance was highlighted by a no-hitter by Addison Moseley in Game One.
FAULKNER 7, POINT 0
Moseley, the freshman from Opp, registered her first career no-no and her second shutout of the week, improving to 6-6 on the year. She struck out six and issued zero walks as she and the defense allowed only three baserunners on two hit-by-pitches and an error. Anna Catherine Segrest, Kensley Wesley and Abrianna Davis all posted 2-3 stat lines, and Abby Terrell and Kelbi Johnson each went 1-2.
Chloe Mitcham took the loss for Point while seeing just one out and walking the next three Faulkner batters. Terrell opened the scoring with a single to plate Segrest. Moseley struck out the leadoff Skyhawk batter before inducing a grounder to Segrest at short and a lineout to Terrell in right field to strand two plunked hitters.
In her first start since the Mobile series, Wesley led off the second with a single and came home on a Davis triple. The senior designated player from Shelby, Ala., did the same to open the fourth. She moved to second on a Johnson sac bunt and to third on a Davis single before scoring on a Bailea Boone single. Segrest brought Davis in and got Boone to third with a single to make it 4-0. The catcher then threw to shortstop to try and catch Segrest stealing, but the throw leaked into the outfield and Boone scored on the miscue. Boone followed by catching three consecutive flyouts in left field to help Moseley shut down Point in the bottom of the fourth.
Terrell drew a four-pitch walk to open the fifth, and after a pair of flyouts, Johnson capped off a seven-pitch at-bat by lofting the full-count offering over the left field fence to bring the score to 7-0. Then, in the last frame, Moseley induced popups to Madelyn Becker at third and Segrest at short between one last strikeout.
FAULKNER 10, POINT 5
Boone kept it going with a single to left on the first pitch of Game Two, and the speedy freshman promptly stole second before coming home on a Sarah Williams single. The Skyhawks answered the 1-0 first-inning deficit this time, learning their lesson as Chelsey Hogsed and Anna McMahan greeted Faulkner starter Reece Patterson with back-to-back singles to center. A groundout scored Hogsed and a Segrest error plated McMahan before Davis secured a groundout at second to give the bats back to Faulkner trailing 2-1.
Johnson responded immediately with a leadoff single to center in the second frame. She stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before tying the game on an Abbie Davis sac bunt. Segrest then helped provide the middle out of a three-up-three-down bottom half-inning, as she redirected a Laura Fendley grounder that went between Patterson's legs to Abrianna Davis at second, who threw out to Johnson at first.
Segrest continued to make plays, this time on offense as she doubled to left in the third frame. She gave way to Addyson Jarman, who launched a 2-0 pitch over the left center wall for a 4-2 lead. Becker proceeded to walk on a full count before stealing second and reaching third on a Johnson single to the pitcher. The duo then pulled off a successful double steal, with Becker sliding home for her team's fifth run. The Skyhawks loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with a single, a failed fielder's choice and a walk and drew within one with a passed ball and a grounder to short, but Patterson limited the damage by catching an inning-ending lineout two pitches after the last score.
With two outs in the top of the fourth, Boone drew a four-pitch walk, stole second and scored on a Segrest single to left. Jarman walked on a full count to put runners on the first two bases. A Williams grounder on the next pitch got Segrest to third, and a fielding error on the first baseman brought her home. Jarman reached third on the play, and she brought the score to 8-4 on a delayed double steal. Hogsed got a run back for Point in the fifth when she led off with a double to left to cap off a 3-3 day at the plate and got home on a pair of groundouts. Patterson ended the frame and kept the damage to a minimum once more as she struck out the side.
Boone led off the sixth inning by turning in a single to center on the first pitch she saw from Point reliever Kendall Holbrook. Two pitches and a sacrifice out later, Jarman stepped into the box and delivered another two-run shot to left field for a home run off each pitcher she went up against in Game Two. In the bottom half, groundouts to Patterson, Johnson and Davis stranded a runner who reached on a Becker error. Becker would make up for it in the final frame, securing all three grounders and throwing to Johnson for all three putouts to seal the season sweep of the Skyhawks.
Patterson earned her ninth win of the season in a complete game effort, surrendering four hits, two balls and three earned runs, all to the first three batters in the Skyhawk order, while striking out three. Alyssa Burrows took the loss for Point as the Faulkner bats tallied seven hits, seven earned runs, three balls and four strikeouts on her. The top three Lady Eagle batters in Boone, Segrest and Jarman each went 2-3, while Jarman scored three times with four RBI. Johnson solidified a .500 day with a 2-4 mark, and Williams was 1-4 with two RBI.
With four sweeps and a 9-1 record in the last five series on the road, the Lady Eagles are set to return home at long last with an April 24 doubleheader at Wynn Field against Abraham Baldwin at 1 and 3 pm.
