Box Score Faulkner's press Sunday afternoon caused havoc for the tired visitors from Ave Maria as the Lady Eagles converted defense into offense four times a 4-0 victory at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium.
In a match rescheduled from Friday night, the Lady Eagles were able to catch the Gyrenes just under 22 hours after the guests tied a school record for goals in a season against Talladega. Ave Maria could not duplicate their prior success Sunday afternoon as the Lady Eagles held the Gyrenes to just four shots on target in the clean sheet defensive effort.
The home team struck first in the 19th minute when Victoria Moran (SO/Buenos Aires, Argentina) struck a free kick from about 30 yards out over the keeper, off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net after drawing the foul. The Lady Eagles held serve for the rest of the half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Wilson Stephen (SO/Montgomery, Ala.)'s second half brace put the game out of reach. The Montgomery native's first goal was started by a perfect slide tackle from Haley Bartell (SO/Pace, Fla.) who played the ball to Moran in the middle of the pitch at the hour mark. The Argenitne pushed the ball wide to Carolin Gaeher (FR/Muenster, Germany) who's cross to Stephen was precise for a one-touch finish. Gaeher found Stephen around the penalty spot in the 71st minute as the striker made no mistake for her second goal of the day.
Kaitlin Obrero (FR/Winter Haven, Fla.) lauched a high cross in the 80th minute which caused chaos in the middle of the box. Gianna Mendez (FR/Mexico City, Mexico) found her foot to the ball after the keeper missed the catch in the clutter and redirected it into the back of the net.
Megan White (FR/St. Angelo, Texas) stopped all four on target efforts as well as several other key opportunites en route to her first collegiate shutout.
"Obviously, there's always things we can do better, but we're really really happy to get a shutout today," head coach Pritchard Ndaira said. "[After last year's stuggles scoring] getting our forwards finding the back of the net is exciting for them and the rest of the team. It's just a good day for us."
The Lady Eagles improve to 1-1 and have conceded just once in 180 minutes this season. They will travel to Texas to face Jarvis Christian Friday at 5 p.m.
