MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Faulkner waits a long, anxious eight days to see if the season's work is enough for an at-large bid to the NAIA National Championship after falling 2-1 in a heartbreaker to William Carey Thursday night at the Emory Folmar Soccer Complex.
Faulkner got ahead seven minutes into the match when
Angel Ugwumba tied the program record for single-season goals with his 13th goal on a follow-up rebound to put Faulkner ahead for the first time ever in the SSAC semifinals and scoring the first goal for the Eagles at that stage since 2016.
William Carey got one back just before the break with Rico Duggan's corner finding Marc Guerrero who tucked it away.
The tie held until late in the match when
Miguel Romero was shielding the ball in the 83rd minute near the Eagles' defensive 18 when a challenge from Owen Fontenot was ruled fair and his cross found Duggan for a top-notch finish to spoil the Eagles' chance to make the finals for the first time in program history.
The Eagles now wait until Friday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. to see if their 11-4-3 season is good enough for the program's first trip to the national tournament.
