Cicala's individual crown leads Faulkner to fourth-place at SSAC Championship

GREENVILLE, Ala. - Rodolphe Cicala claimed Faulkner Men's Golf's first SSAC individual crown at the SSAC Men's Golf Championship at Robert Trent Jones Cambrian Ridge Tuesday through Thursday by shooting under-par each round to finish nine-under-par 207 to lead the Eagles to a fourth place finish.

Cicala won his fourth tournament of the season, leading the whole way. Rodolphe started Tuesday on fire with three consecutive birdies before bouncing back from a bogey on seven with a birdie on nine, ten and twelve. He concluded the round with a seventh birdie of the day on the 17th to tie what was then an SSAC record at the course with a six-under-par 66. Cicala shot a clean front nine Wednesday with eight pars and a birdie on three before going one under on the back nine to end his second round with a two-under-par 70 to sleep on a three-stroke lead going into the final round. After a third straight birdie on hole three, Cicala hit bogies on holes five, seven and eight to end up in a tie with Dalton State's Barrett Loftis before both birdied nine. Cicala edged ahead on the 10th, another hole he went one-under-par each round, with a birdie before picking up another shot on the 13th with a bogey from Loftis. Loftis hit birdies on 15 and 17 to cut Cicala's lead to one around his birdie on 16 to set up a dramatic 18th hole for the conference title with the Biarritz, France native leading by one shot. Cicala knocked home a par while Loftis bogied to beat the field by two strokes and break a streak of nine consecutive individual championships from Dalton State.

Shortly behind Cicala was his fellow countryman Gabriel Dulon who placed fifth with a three-under-par 213 shooting a four-under-par 68, the second best score of the day, to close out the tournament and move up three spots on the final day. It marked the sixth time he has finished in the top five and the fourth time the duo of Cicala and Dulon finished top five. Dulon started with a birdie every day and did the same on hole seven. Dulon shot one-under-par 71 in the first round with four birdies. Dulon started on fire on the second round going three-under-par through seven before a double bogie on the eighth halted it temporarily, but Dulon responded with two birdies on the next three holes to go back to three-under but struggled after that to finish two-over-par in the second round. Dulon circled seven numbers on his scorecard in the third round shooting four-under on the front-nine Loblolly course and even par on the Sherling course to climb into fifth place.

Garrett Jurkofsky and Ernest Juglar shot 21-over-par 237 over the three-day, three-round event to tie for 42nd. Jurkofsky shot a three-over-par 75 in the first round fueled by an even-par back nine with birdies on 10 and 17. In the second round, Jurkofsky rebounded from a tough front nine with a great back nine shooting five shots better on the Sherling course with three birdies. Thursday, the tide switched as he responded from a three-over-par first three holes with a couple of birdies to end one-over-par on the Loblolly course and saw the tournament end with a little bit of struggles to end 11-over-par on the round.

Juglar turned in a four-over-par first round with and even par front nine before going six-over the next day, with birdies on 13 each of the first two rounds. On Thursday, Juglar traded a couple of double bogies on one, two and seven with birdies on three, four and eight to hit the turn four-over-par before closing out an 11-over-par round and wrap up his tournament with eight birdies.

Juan Cespedes tied for 46th with a 25-over-par 241 with eight-over-par 80s sandwiching a nine-over-par 81. Cespedes started the event with a birdie and experience an up-and-down first five holes to hit the sixth six-over-par. Cespedes avoided the big number in the second round and shot a lot more consistently in the second round to enter the final day 17-over-par. Cespedes hit the only eagle for the Eagles in the third round on the par-five seventh to shoot one-over-par on the Loblolly front nine before wrapping up the event with a birdie.

Judson Graham and Connor Taylor competed as individuals and finished 54th and 60th, respectively. Graham ended 34-over-par led by a six-over-par second round with birdies on one and nine. Taylor cut 11 shots off his Monday score on Tuesday and shot fairly similarly on Wednesday to end his event 72-over-par 288.

With the individual win, Cicala earns automatic qualification to the national event but the team anticipates joining him and receiving an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament held on May 20-23 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. The field will be announced May 9.
