Whitehead strikes twice late, lifts Faulkner over Concordia 2-1

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Concordia's Jorge Alberto Guarin hammered a 30-yard bullet over a leaping goalkeeper to give the visitors a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the second half, but a pair of goals courtesy of Costandinos Whitehead catapulted Faulkner into the 2-1 victory here at John Mark Stallings Field this evening. Faulkner cliched the trophy in its inaugural Eagle Invitational.

Guarin's brilliant go-ahead goal quickly changed the tempo of the game putting the home team on an even more aggressive offensive surge.

The Eagles orchestrated numerous assaults on the goal without success until Concordia's Alejandro Castro misplayed a bounce off the turf opening a window for Whitehead. The forward darted by the keeper and struck a low ball into the netting to tie the event with 12 minutes to play.

Whitehead was at it again in the 83rd minute when he planted hard 15 yards outside the frame juking an opponent. He then turned quickly and crushed a shot around the reorienting defender and by the keeper and inside the back post for game-winning goal.

Faulkner outshot the Hornets 29 to 10 in the lopsided affair and placed nine of their efforts on target while the visitors framed just three.

Whitehead and Gnande Zleh were named co-tournament MVPs.

Pritchard Ndaira (2-0-1) got the win with two saves while allowing a goal.

Faulkner moved to 2-0-1 on the year and will next face Georgia Southwestern at 3 p.m. on Thursday in Americus, Ga.
