Late go-ahead field goal not enough as Eagles fall to Keiser

Box Score

Faulkner overcame a listless start to take a lead over upstart Keiser before losing 26-22 on a Marques Burgess touchdown run with 34 seconds left.

Alvin Renteria (SO/Phenix City, Ala.) connected on a 41-yard field goal with 4:29 to play to put Faulkner up 22-20. The Eagle defense proved unable to hold the lead as Keiser mounted a nine-play, 76-yard drive to set up the Burgess score. Faulkner got it as far as the Seahawk 31 with 4.1 seconds left but saw its last-ditch effort throw fall harmlessly to the turf to cap it.

The Eagles opened the game flatly, producing negative offensive yards on their first three possessions and punting each time. After Keiser popped a pair of touchdowns on passes from Eli Mathews to Shavon Taylor for the 14-0 lead, Faulkner finally got off the deck midway through the second quarter. Jayce Fisher (FR/Odenville, Ala.) hit Reagan Amos (SR/Woodstock, Ga.) on a pass to move the chains for the first time. That ignited a drive that ended with Amos taking off the pitch on an end-around only to throw it to a wide-open Chase Wilson (SR/Dawsonville, Ga.) for a 5-yard toss, cutting the deficit to 14-7.

Three minutes later, Faulkner struck again when Fisher went over the top to a streaking Jamario Dixon (JR/Jackson, Miss.) for a 65-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the score to 14-13.

The Eagles took the lead at the halftime horn as Alvin Renteria connected on a 40-yard field goal for the 16-14 lead. The strike made Renteria only the fourth kicker in program history to hit a field goal of 40 yards or more. Renteria accounted for the only points of the third quarter when he connected on an 18-yarder with 56 seconds on the clock to push it to 19-14. Renteria, who made kicks of 40 and 41 yards Saturday, is now the only Eagle kicker to hit mutliple field goals of 40 yards or greater.

Keiser scored with 11:41 left in the game when Mathews turned a busted play into a 20-yard touchdown run for the 20-19 lead. Renteria's go-ahead kick came after Faulkner's ensuing drive stalled at the Keiser 24.

The loss is the second straight for Faulkner. The two defeats came by a total of five points.

Faulkner (3-3, 0-2) stays in Sun Division play for the duration of the season. The Eagles travel to Edward Waters in Jacksonville, Fla. next week before heading to Webber International in Lake Wales, Fla. the following week. Keiser (4-2, 2-0) faces Webber and Warner in the next two weeks.
