Two programs on the rise meet in Mt. Vernon, Ga. for a rematch of a contest a couple weeks ago with a spot in the SSAC semifinals on the line Thursday. Faulkner, the six-seed, looks to make its second consecutive trip to the semis while Brewton-Parker could potentially get into the national tournament with a good run. The contest is set for 4:30 p.m. central.
Both programs snapped postseason droughts last season with Brewton-Parker earning their first trips to the conference tournament since 2009 and Faulkner since 2017 and both reached the semifinals where the Barons lost to eventual national runner-up William Carey and Faulkner to NAIA Opening Round competitor Middle Georgia.
While even on shots on goal with nine apiece, Faulkner could not get past Baron keeper Kelsie Stapler who made eight saves before
Annabel Cuthbert scored in the 89th minute Oct. 23. Three different players found the net for Brewton-Parker with the game opening with a pair of goals in the 62nd and 63rd minutes turning a 1-0 contest to a 3-0 difference.
The loss snapped a two-match win streak and just the second loss since 2010 to the Barons. The Lady Eagles have not faced an opponent more frequently than Brewton-Parker with the postseason meeting marking the 19th matchup all-time. Thursday's matchup marks the first time the sides have met twice in a season, but will be the third contest in the calendar year. Faulkner holds an 11-5-2 record in the series.
For Faulkner,
Faith Pelletier-King and
Luci Schroder hold the most numbers on the attack that struggled with injuries throughout the regular season. Schroder is the only Lady Eagle to start all 16 matches and just three others--
Gianna Mendez,
Klara Ebert and
Camila Parada have appeared in all 16. Parada, one of the team's center backs, leads the team in minutes played, 99 minutes more than the next closest in Schroder.
As for the hosts, Kadisha Martina leads an offense that has nearly doubled Faulkner's offensive output with 42 goals in 18 matches. Martina's 15 goals leads the net finding and her four assists are third on her team behind Deandra Pickering's eight and Aurora Miglio's five. Miglio brings the most balanced offensive output with nine goals for second on the team. She scored the second goal in the earlier meeting. Pickering joins Chelsea Frederick as the lone Barons to start every match and Miglio and Melia Cunningham have played in every match.
Prior to the meeting earlier this season, Faulkner had taken a positive result in the last nine trips to Mt. Vernon dating back to 2006 including a 1-0 win in 2019. To watch the match,
