A standout three-sport athlete at Highland Home High School, Joe Bennett came to Alabama Christian College on athletic scholarship with both the inaugural baseball and basketball teams. A shortstop on the diamond, Bennett starred as a team captain and guard in basketball that routinely filled the aggregate of local sports sections as the high scorer for the Eagles. In the days since his playing career concluded, Bennett has built a strong family and a successful insurance business. He received his Juris Doctorate from Jones School of Law and has served with Cousins Insurance Agency since 1976, becoming sole owner in 1993. He and his wife, Sara, have three children, five grandchildren and four step grandchildren.
