Tom Kelsey served as athletic director and head coach of the men's basketball program from 1989 to 1994. The highlight of his Faulkner career was the 1991-92 basketball season which saw a series of firsts. The team was ranked 11th in the Preseason NAIA Coaches Poll, the first Faulkner program to appear in the poll. The team ended the season with two more program firsts, winning the NAIA District 27 Championship and securing a berth in the NAIA Men's Basketball Tournament. Those accomplishments led to Kelsey being selected as the 1992 NAIA District 27 Coach of the Year.
