One of Faulkner softball coach Hal Wynn’s biggest recruiting gems came to Montgomery by way of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Nicole Fownes chose to play for a program that was just in its fourth season of intercollegiate competition, and she immediately made her mark, winning 20 games as a freshman. She followed with seasons of 13, 17, and 15 wins, helping Faulkner to 127 victories during her four-year career. Her 1.17 career earned-run average has yet to be eclipsed, and she was Faulkner’s first NAIA All-American in any sports, earning First Team honors in 1996 and Second Team honors in 1997. Wynn said that her presence in the early stages of Faulkner softball made a dramatic impact on the successful foundation the program enjoys today.
